The Salem Witch

Having moved to the USA several years ago with her husband, a fluent Spanish speaker,  this ‘ex-pat’ has developed some interesting views on things American, British, Hispanic and about the world in general. Sometimes caustic, sometimes funny but always honest. She writes to us here in Spain about the American point of view and how things are perceived across the pond.

It Doesn’t Rain But it Pours

Over here in New England we have experienced a very hot and humid summer, with seven weeks of unbroken heat and drought.  But a week ago, all this came to a drenching end, as a Nor'Easter hit the area, and we were reminded in a big way what rain is.  It was biblical, the streets ran like rivers, and it didn't stop for three days.  Well, guess what folks, the Obamas had just arrived to spend a week on Martha's Vineyard, a very tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod.  It used to be a bleak little place, inhabited by whalers and others who struggled to wrest a living from the Atlantic.  Nowadays, it is almost a prohibited area unless you are rich and handsome.  You get there on a ferry, and it is a favourite spot for the Obama family to spend some precious holiday time.  Michelle and the girls had a nice time in Spain, of course, but Dad had been left behind to deal with Stuff back home.  So, as soon as they settled in the rains began, and now that they have flown away the sun is back in full splendour.

But this is just another indication that things are not going Barack's way.  In fact, things are going very badly in most ways for the lean and handsome fellow.  Having won a very decisive and impressive victory in the last election, beating out McCain and Sarah Palin, the thought would be that this country could perhaps move into a nicer and better era.  But thanks to its crazy and corrupt political system, you would be wrong.  In spite of a clear majority in Washington, Obama and the Democrats have been blocked and outwitted all along by the unbelievably crafty Republicans.  No lie is too enormous, no claim too outrageous, but the Reps will shout it to the rooftops, and it will be believed and accepted.  I would remind you of the long ago Swift Boat affair, when John Kerry was trounced when he challenged Bushie in 2004 - they managed to discredit Kerry, a decorated and honourable ex soldier, vis a vis to Bushie, who dodged the draft and did not even turn up to do his token weekends in the Air National Guard in Alabama.  You have to conclude that the more monstrous the lie, the more successful it is, in American political life.

The Democrat party is frankly afraid of the opposition, and cowers like a skinny kid in the corner of the playground, while the big bully kicks his behind.  They allow their message to be cancelled out by the Republican attack mode.  And of course the great American public embraces the party which stands for Kick Ass, Standing Tall, and the rule of God.  It is quite frightening how they lap it all up, and last week there was a character called Glenn Beck who spoke at a big rally of thousands in the Mall at Washington, who preached that America has to be back where it belongs, at the top, and with God running everything.  Thousands of Americans were there with their picnics, loving every minute and agreeing with every ridiculous word.

The economy here is dire.  There are many millions who cannot find a job, and after 99 weeks of dole money, it stops, punto final, no more.  A new echelon of society is emerging after the 2008 collapse, the 99ers, or the people who lost jobs two years ago, and have never been able to find another.  Not due to shiftlessness, or lack of skills or any other drawback, but simply because the jobs no longer exist.  I have read their comments, and they are worried sick.  The dole money at least kept them going, while they hoped, but now with no income at all they might as well queue up for the doors of the old workhouse.  The good ole boys in DC have refused to extend the 99 week period - so I suppose God will take care of them.

Obama does not seem to have grasped the big nettle of employment and jobs.  He concentrated all his early months with the Health Care bill, which has not really done a thing for anyone as far as I can see.  Except have the insurance companies rubbing hands in glee, as it demands that all Americans buy insurance, no choice to opt out any more, so all their lobbying ie bribes, hit the mark.

The United States is in a big mess.  Its armed forces stomp around the globe, it is in debt to everyone, its schools have no supplies and teachers have been laid off, and the middle class is being crushed to bones.  Lifestyles are being lost, and dreams have died.  The very rich are just wonderful, thank you, but apart from this happy band at the top, there is real poverty and despair going around.  So, Barack's wet week is a bit symbolic of the country of which he is the king and emperor - for now.
