"What?" she said
"Hmmm. ooh, aah" they said
"C'mon" - she said
"What? - she said
"Oooh" - they said
"A letter" - they said
"Haven't had a PROPER letter from anyone in ages" they said
"And" they said "Written in fountain pen - you know the one that you have to fill up with that Quink ink stuff".
"Mmmm" they said "I'd like to have more of those old fashioned letters"
"Well" I said "Do YOU ever write any?"
"Well" they said "No, we don't. We don't have to, as we have email now."
What a pitiful shame that generations of the Internet are missing out of the joy of letter-writing(and receiving) a personal letter through the post. It forms history, legacies, and family and friendships more intimate and memorable than the typed electronic word.
GO ON - try it once in a while. You will, I can vouch, be very pleasantly surprised at the response. Write to a child, a grand child, a relative living alone, an old school friend, your closest buddy who is rarely seen these days.
Keep some samples of hand-writing - my late father had beautiful hand-writing - flourishing and stylish and always used a fountain pen. Company letters were meticulously sent out in the post having been personally dictated(there's another skill lost - shorthand....), checked and signed. Not quite so with the pre-printed signatures of more modern times.
"OK" she said
"We'll give it a shot" they said
"Good" I said
